Blog Hop - June

stitching bloggers blog hop for june 2016 thrift store finds and stories

I've been off the blogosphere for awhile now.  I was correcting standardized tests for most of April and May so my laptop was busy reading all those student written essays.  So, I'm back for the summer with a blog hop.  I haven't done one in awhile.

I have some great thrift store finds.  I have SCRAP, a "creative reuse store" which is a thrift store for craft items and other things that could be used as art.  They've moved to a new location and raised some of their prices but I still go there occasionally to see what I find.  I've found some amazing patterns, old magazines, kits and fabric.

This tote was only $3
Found my Fuji pattern for $2

And this whole lot of linen was like $4-5
My other, but not cross stitch related, find was these Boomwhackers.  They retail  for $25.  I got them for $2

Blog Hop 16

Well, we had fun with Adèle's birthday.  Her favorite present was the book from Grandma.  She's still looking at it 30 minutes later.  She didn't even want to open any other gifts after she found that.

Now, on to the blog hop.  Today's prompt is:

How many needles have you lost? Feel free to estimate. Tell us your best “lost needle” story ;)

You know, I'm not sure that I've really lost any needles.  I have to be very very very careful with a 2 and 3 year old.  I do occasionally drop them, but I have to scour the floor looking for it because if I don't find it, the girls will and I don't want them to get hurt.  I have had a couple of scares where I couldn't find the needle right away and a couple of times where Zoé found it first.

Blog Hop #15

Eventually there comes a time when you’re not feeling well, whether it’s the flu or a cold or something else entirely. The question is, do you manage any stitching when you’re under the weather or does it just have to wait for better days?

Well, when I first started stitching, I had chronic sinus infections due to a deviated septum.  I missed a bunch of school because I had major headaches and nausea due to post nasal drip.  I actually found that I could cross stitch despite the discomfort but reading books was out of the question.  In fact, I started cross stitching while recovering from having my wisdom teeth out.

I think about the only thing that slows me down is if I'm wrapped in the covers with a major fever/chills or if I'm tied to the toilet with some kind of gastrointestinal virus.  Otherwise, head colds don't bother me while stitching.

**edit**

After a bit of reflecting, I do recall a time when I was too sick to stitch.  When I was pregnant with my first child, I had horrible morning sickness.  As in, I had to be drugged to stop the vomiting.  At the time, my ob would only give me phengren which also is used to treat insomnia (in other words, it also knocks you out).  So, I didn't feel like stitching the whole first trimester.

Blog Hop #14 Looking back in 2012

Hi everyone. To make my blog new for 2013, I decided to finally update the layout.  Or at least the background.  Hope you like it.

Today's blog hop prompt is:

What was your biggest stitching accomplishment in 2012?
What was your favorite stash acquisition in 2012 and will you be using it in 2013?

Well, definitely, my biggest accomplishment was the Whitework Sampler

I had several stash acquisitions.  Most of them came from SCRAP.  The one I'm most excited about is the HAED that I won at the beginning of December.  I don't think I will get around to stitching it at all this year.  Especially not with graduate school.

Hope to be guest blogging again soon.  Working on my topic.

Blog Hop #13 Stitchmas Wish

The holidays are right around the corner and gift exchanges are happening everywhere you look. If an amazingly magical Stitchmas Santa were to fly overhead and bring you one stitching wish, what would it be?

I'll be honest.  Christmas is going to be very lean this year.  With both of us unemployed, I have no extra money for Christmas gifts.  My little girls are going to have to go without presents from us.  If they get anything, it will be from relatives.  I don't expect to be stitching much next year anyway with me starting the masters program.  I would rather get something for them than for me.

The one piece I would really like to do is this piece:

I found this pattern at SCRAP and I really want to do it for the girls' room but I don't have the Balger threads or Marlitt.  I think there's some kind of ribbon floss too.  Actually, I'm not even sure what Marlitt is.  Plus, I would want to stitch it on White Monaco and I only have Antique White in my stash.  So, my wish would be to get the materials necessary to stitch it.

And after reading the pattern, I discovered that it was for 18 ct Aida and it was Medicis floss. Hence the correction.  Medicis is discontinued and can be substituted with DMC.  It still requires 9 colors of Balger and 2 colors of 1/16" metallic ribbon which I can't afford.

Blog Hop #12

The prompt:  When it comes to the stitching part of your life, what are you most thankful for?

At this juncture, I am thankful that I actually can stitch.  Last year, I didn't think I was going to be physically able to.

I've had a rough couple of years.  In the first two years of my marriage, I had two children.  I also worked full time for T-Mobile as a tech rep.  I used to work the normal 8 hour per day workweek but right before Adèle was born, I started working 4 10 hour shifts.  It was nice because you get three days off but it does make for a long day.  It was a call center so I was basically chained to a desk with a headset on (I always thought of it as a dog collar) and I was constantly typing and using my mouse because all the info on the phones is in the computer and I always had to document the account. The job sucked.  I basically got verbally abused for 8-10 hours per day because most customers in tech support aren't happy because the phone is not working.

Early last fall, I started to have horrible pains in my hands.  I was working on hand quilting a panel quilt for my daughter (which I haven't finished).  I finally went to the doctor and had my fears confirmed:  I had carpal tunnel.

Carpal tunnel is kinda the death knell for pianists.  I had always been afraid of getting it.  Being a pianist, I knew how to hold my hands properly at the keyboard but my doctor said it was probably a combo of typing so much and the two pregnancies where my weight was fluctuating up and down and I had had problems with my hands swelling.  I got braces and took and anti-inflammatory for the pain.  T-Mobile (who really is a nice employer despite the horrible job) got me an ergo keyboard and mousepad.  But I was in a lot of pain.  I couldn't stitch much at all (if you look back at my blog archives, there isn't much there for Sept, Oct, Nov and Dec).  I tried to play piano but my hands felt so weak that I almost had a nervous breakdown.  It was not a good time.

God answered my prayers on this one and with using the ergo keyboard, the pain gradually went away.  I am pretty much pain free at this point.  I was able to resume stitching in January.  Since losing my job in June, I think that has improved things too as I'm not typing 10 hours a day anymore.

Blog Hop #11 Interesting and Unusual Stash

What has been your most unusual or most interesting stash acquisition to date?

Lately, my stash has been provided by one store:  SCRAP.  SCRAP is a "creative reuse store."  Basically, a thrift store for craft stuff.  Awesome deals.  So awesome in fact, that I have my own album in the side bar where you can see the cool stuff that I've picked up there.  We're talking Mill Hill kits for $2.

Blog Hop! Stitching Aides

What are your must-have stitching tools and aides? Other than your trusty scissors, of course. Is there a problem you have had when stitching that you created your own solution for, or have you purchased a tool that helped?

I must have my Q snaps.  Unless I'm stitching on perforated paper or vinyl weave or a tiny piece of Aida, it's on the Q snaps.  And sometimes my Ks Creation stand but I don't use it as often as I used to due to children.
My 8x8 probably need to have the clamps replaced but I have extended their life by putting strips of batting between them and the cross stitch fabric.  I was channeling MacGyver.

Blog Hop: Your Favorite Project

What has been your favorite project to stitch? (either finished or in progress)

I really liked stitching Vino Rosso.  It was just about the right size and it's beaded which I think makes it more interesting.

I also really enjoyed working on the Fairy Tale Sampler.  It has both beads and veregated floss

I missed a bunch of blog hops

Awhile back, I did Stitching the Night Away's blog hop.  I intended to do more of them, but somehow missed a bunch of them.  So...better late than never.

Also, did you get your Chick-Fil-A today?  I did.  It was tasty and it was still crazy busy at 9:20 pm.

Prompt #2: Do you use a stand when you stitch? If so, tell us about it and share pictures if you’ve got them. If not, would you like to try using a stand? Do you have any tips or tricks around using a stand versus not using a stand?

Answer: I do own a Ks Creations Z Frame stand.  I really do like it.  It works well with the Q Snaps.  I don't use it as often as I would like because of the girls.  I use it on larger projects because they get harder to hold.  I used it fairly often on the whitework piece.

As for tips, make sure that you buy a stand that is adjustable in several places (mine has 3 places I can adjust) as this will give you optimum comfort.  There is also one screw to adjust to flip the piece around which is handy when switching colors.  Also, when doing a larger piece, use hair clips to keep the fabric out of the way.

Prompt #3: Do you set stitching goals for yourself and how do you plan them out? (Weekly, monthly, annually?) What are your current stitching goals (if you don’t mind sharing)?
In addition to setting goals for yourself, do you have a special reward that you reserve for when you reach a stitching goal?
Answer: I generally set yearly goals.  You can find the goals for this year in the sidebar of my blog.  I don't really have a reward for finishing something.  I just am happy that I actually got the piece finished.  Right now, I have 2 of my goals completed and 2 to go.  I am fairly certain I will have at least 3 done by the end of the year.
Prompt: #4: Do you experience this same assumption from society in general that just because you’re being crafty you’re also driven by some unseen force to be in constant 1950s housewife mode? and then…. Who actually does the cooking and the cleaning in the household? I’d also really like to hear some words from the men in the crowd who stitch on this topic. What sort of societal reactions do you get and what ridiculously wrong assumptions do people make towards you when they see you working on needlework?
Answer: I used to bring my stitching to work.  For the last 3 years, I've worked in a cell phone call center.  The general reactions were "That's gorgeous," "you have way to much time on your hands," how do you have the patience for that" along with a few people that thought I was born in the wrong era.
I never had a problem with people thinking that I was a 1950 housewife.  Until June 22, I was working full time while my husband stayed at home with the 1 and 2 year old and did the cooking and cleaning.  It's actually my husband that takes the flack for that.  We chose to do one income because if we had two, one income would pay for childcare and the other would pay everything else.  Why have someone else raise our children?
Prompt #5:Do you find yourself stitching seasonally or do you just stitch what moves you at the moment? What’s your favorite holiday or season to stitch for?
Answer: I don't really stitch seasonally because Christmas pieces generally have to be started in summer to be finished by Christmas (ie stockings).  The exception is Christmas ornaments which I will do in November and December because they are small and can be finished quickly.
I mostly stitch for Christmas.  I hope to expand but we don't really decorate our house for the seasons except Christmas.
Prompt #6: Some of us have a favorite chair that we sit in to stitch, others prefer to enjoy a steaming mug of tea while they stitch. Maybe you need to get comfortable and put on your pajamas before you pick up your needle or you simply must rearrange all the sofa pillows before you sit down. Sometimes the ritual is in the clean up when we’re done and everything must go in a certain place. What sort of stitching rituals do you have when you sit down to work on your projects?
Answer: I used to have stitching rituals.  They've kinda been thrown out.  When I was in college, I would move my little lamp over to my bunk bed and use my little backrest and stitch while watching something on TV.  When I had my own apartment, it was the same thing except on a couch.  I don't eat while I stitch as that gets things messy but I might have a glass of water nearby.
Now, I just try to get in a little stitching in between keeping the girls out of trouble and out of my needlework.
Prompt #7: What do you do with the floss, thread, beads, and other elements you have left over from full project kits?
Answer: I used to keep the pattern and the floss from the kit in a little expandable file.  Then one day I threw it all out.  I normally toss the floss as I don't do a ton of kits anymore but if there are beads left over, I will keep them.  Same with any specialty items that I might find useful.  I just finished a mill hill kit so I put the beads in my bead keeper and used my Dynmo label maker to put the number on them so if I do something else with those, I have them.
